I can not take credit for the information here, well a limited amount, however, the vast majority of the work/research has been performed by Brad @ NANO.
For the most part, refilling the NANO tank is readily available in most areas. The Coast and Great Lakes region offer the added benefit of having Scuba shops which can refill your NANO bottles. Here is a short list of business' that can do HPA type refills (compressed air). If you like the idea of using Nitrogen, that is fine, but HPA is much more readily available. As NANO technology catches on, the Speed Shops that fill nitrous bottles likely will also refill NANO bottles, it's good business.
1. Welding Supply House
2. Paint Ball Shops
3. Local Fire Dept
4. Scuba Shops
5. Owner (we offer high-pressure air compressors)
6. Owner (rent mother bottle)
Another way to locate a local refill station is simply to Google your zip code with either, scuba, paint-ball, fire safety or welding supplies. Some need the quick connect fitting that we do carry, if the refill station does not have one and they are only $15.00 through us. It can be seen at the end of the hose in the picture below.
Now if you decide to rent a Mother bottle (needs to be 5/6k PSI), you will need the high pressure Transfer/Fill line, again available through us. Also, you can go to any Hydraulics Supply House and have them make one up for you. The cost from us is $125.00/195.00 depending on which one you'll need (CGA number on the bottle valve). So you can see that it may be smart to check on having one made up locally.
Generally what you would want to rent is a 5000-6000psi nitrogen bottle, and is the same size as a 56lb nitrous mother bottle. They can be found at your local welding supply house. Most get about 20/25 fills with this mother bottle. rental is about $7/20 a month depending on region/area. again, you will need a transfer line.
Notes:
We need a CGA connection #580 on the transfer/fill line to be able to hook up to the Nitrogen Mother bottle.
Oxygen tanks use a CGA connection #540, which is different than the Nitrogen valves. However, oxygen tanks are rated only at 2000/3000psi, not high enough, so won't work for mother bottle.
The Acetylene bottles are only rated to about 300psi, so they are out as Mother bottles.
A Helium tank may work as they are rated for high pressure and have the same CGA or compatible valve.
A CO2 is out as it is rated for somewhere in 1000psi area only. These tanks like the ones above will have burst discs rated somewhere near or slightly above the bottle max psi rating.
Be fore-warned, Nitrogen is the leading cause of death in the gas industry due to it's ability to displace oxygen. So if using Nitrogen instead of HPA, make sure it's well ventilated when transferring, or filling your bottle. (facts courtesy of NHRATA01)
Here are the CGA #s most widely used on the Nitrogen bottles: CGA-677 and CGA-347. Usually the CGA-347's are on the 5000psi nitrogen bottle, and the CGA-677 are on the 6000psi bottle.
